Abrahamic Covenant
Read Genesis 12:1-3
“Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country,
and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land
that I will shew thee; And I will make of thee a great nation,
and I will bless thee, and make they name great: and thou shalt
be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse
them that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the
earth be blessed.”
What was required of Abram under this covenant?
What was God going to do if Abram obeyed?
You will find this concept: “If you will…. then I will…. throughout the Bible.
Read Genesis 17:1-14
“And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared
to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before
me, and be thou perfect. And I will make my covenant between me
and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly. And Abram fell on
his face: and God talked with him, saying, as for me, behold, my
covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.
Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name
shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.
And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations
of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. And I will establish
my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their
generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee,
and to they seed after thee. And I will give unto thee, and to
thy see after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the
land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their
God.
And God said unto Abraham, Thous shalt keep my covenant therefore,
thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. This is my
covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed
after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. And
ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a
token of the covenant betwixt me and you. And he that is eight
days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your
generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money
of any stranger, which is not of thy seed. He that is born in
thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be
circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an ever-
lasting covenant. And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of
his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from
his people; he hath broken my covenant.”
What covenant was Abram to keep with God?
Who did God establish his covenant with?
What did Abraham do to all the males in his household?
What would Abraham receive if he kept this covenant?
The Abrahamic Covenant was pertaining to the ‘rule of God’ in man’s life.
The Mosaic Covenant will pertain to ‘man’s approach to God”.
Mosaic Covenant
Read Exodus 19:5-6 and Exodus 20:1-17
“Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant,
then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people for all the earth is mine.
And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation.”
“And God spake all these words saying, I am the LORD thy God, which have brought
thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have not other
gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of
any thing that is in the heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the
water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I
the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children
unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; and showing mercy unto
thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. Thou shalt not take the
name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh
his name in vain. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour,
and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou
shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy
maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is with- in thy gates: for in six days
the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh
day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Honour thy father and
thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bare
false witness against thy neighbour. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house, thou shalt
not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that
is thy neighbour’s.” What was required of Israel under this covenant What was God going to do
if Israel obeyed The Mosaic Covenant covers three areas of Israel`s life: Personal life relating
to God Social life relating to others Ordinances governing their approach to God
